Sample Theory Questions
On the day of your test the tester will ask you some theory questions regarding the rules of the road and general good driving practice prior to the driving section of you test. Click here to view or download a list of sample questions. As a driver you should be familiar with the rules of the road, you can buy a copy in most bookshops or log on to www.rulesoftheroad.ie for full details.

Road Signs
Along with the theory questions you will also be asked to identify some road signs. Click on this link to see the full list of road signs on the official RSA website.

Technical Checks
You will be also asked to perform some technical checks at the beginning of your test.

The tester will ask you to open the bonnet and you may be asked to locate the following:
- Oil Fill
- Coolant
- Brake Fluid
- Windscreen Washer Bottle
- Power Steering Fluid

This picture shows the location of the above items in an Opel Corsa:

You may also be asked how you check the oil level:
You check the level of oil when the engine is cold and parked on a level surface, remove the dipstick and wipe it, replace dipstick and remove it again, check oil level on the markings on the bottom of the dipstick.

You may also be asked how to check the coolant / brake fluid levels:
Check that the level of coolant is between the minimum and maximum markings on the side of the coolant / brake fluid bottles.

The tester may also ask what you look for on your tyres:
- Ensure tyre pressure is adequate
- Ensure treads are not worn too much (minimum tread depth = 1.6mm)
- Ensure there is no signs of wear, splits or other damage on tyre wall

After the technical checks the tester will check to see if your brake lights and indicators are working. Check these yourself a few days before the test and replace any faulty bulbs. Your test will not go ahead if these are not working.

Secondary Controls
After checking your indicators and brake lights the tester will sit in the car with you and ask you about some of the secondary controls. You should be able to identify / demonstrate your hazard lights, rear demister, heater, wipers, windscreen washer, headlights (dipped and full), fog lights and horn.

Hand Signals
At some point during the test you may be asked to demonstrate some hand signals. There are 6 hand signals you should familiarise yourself with. Click here for details of these.
